Here are real women's stories that inspire me to not let osteoporosis slow me
down. I will feature a new Bone Diva who I hope will encourage you
to make the promise for better bone health, like we did.
- she watches what she eats and has been a member of a health club for more than 30 years. Her exercise routine varies, and ranges from spinning and running to yoga, pilates and lifting free weights.
Mary's love of the gym and pilates inspired her to become an instructor. She works out at her local gym five to six days a week, teaches classes, and inspires others to develop and/or maintain healthy lifestyles.

One reason for Mary's diligence in maintaining a healthy lifestyle is that osteoporosis runs in her family. Her mother suffered a fracture and because of her family's history, Mary and her doctor keep an eye on her bones with annual bone mineral density (BMD) tests. After a recent BMD test, Mary's results revealed bone loss, and she was diagnosed by her doctor with osteopenia. Her doctor prescribed medication and suggested she take both calcium and vitamin D supplements.
The diagnosis hasn't slowed Mary down, and she is keeping up with her exercise routine, which she regularly discusses with her doctor. She also uses her visibility at her health club to encourage the female members to get BMD tests, and she stresses the importance of knowing the risk factors for osteoporosis.
And when Mary's not at the gym, she spends her time with her friends nearby, and is planning a special trip with her sister - a yoga retreat in Tulum, Mexico.
