Dr. West's osteopenia diagnosis could be perceived as another "moment," but she hasn't let it define her or slow her down. Dr. West was aware of her risk for osteoporosis. She has always taken a "preventative rather than remedial approach" to her health, which is why she began regular bone mineral density testing at age 50.

For the last 10 years, Dr. West has been heavily involved in pageants in the state of Texas, including the Ms. Texas Senior America pageant (in 2008, she was crowned Ms. Texas Senior America). She travels all over Texas, twirling the baton (sometimes two), dancing, clogging and playing the piano at nursing homes and retirement centers. All of this while following her bone health treatment plan, which includes medication prescribed by her doctor.
Dr. West also believes that "life doesn't have to end at 50, or 60, or when you retire—all it takes is one baby step to make your dreams come true."
