Here are real women's stories that inspire me to not let osteoporosis slow me down. Each month, I will feature a new Bone Diva who I hope will encourage you to make the promise for better bone health, like we did.

For Sister Karen Cavanagh in New York City, it's all about families.
For Sister Karen Cavanagh in New York City, it's all about families.
Her volunteer work as an advocate for mothers in prison, inspired by her job as a family minister, has helped several women reconnect with their precious children.

Her fulfilling work is one of the reasons why she chose to follow her doctor's advice and treat her postmenopausal osteoporosis, as she refuses to let it get in the way of her busy life. There is too much good work to be done on behalf of others to give into osteoporosis for this busy woman - the fast pace of a true New Yorker is in her voice and in her daily schedule.

There is too much good work to be done on behalf of others...
That's why Sister Karen, whose convent is in Queens, works out five times a week, takes her calcium and vitamin D supplements daily and eats a healthy diet. One of her favorite treats: mixing ricotta cheese with cereal and cinnamon for a calcium-rich "bread pudding" taste.

...I renewed by own freedom when I listened to my doctor and started treating my osteoporosis.
She is hopeful that her efforts will help inspire other women to take responsibility for their own health. "I always want to speak to people about being stewards of their own health. You have to own up to it."
