and she is also happy with the steps she has taken to protect her bones. In 2007, after taking a bone mineral density (BMD) test, Mary was diagnosed with osteopenia by her doctor.
With osteoporosis in her family (Mary's mother and sister-in-law have the condition), Mary knew she needed to take an active role in managing her bone health.
Mary discussed potential treatment options with her family and then her doctor, who prescribed a prescription medication and encouraged her to take calcium tablets and vitamin D.
And it's a good thing, because Mary has a busy schedule, for which she needs to stay strong and healthy. Mary has been a travel agent for 20 years, and at 74 she continues to work daily. In addition, she is a Sunday school teacher and a volunteer at her church.
"I teach teenagers once a week," she says, "they keep me going—they keep me young."
With grandkids from Texas and Georgia and nephews in New Mexico, Minnesota and Pennsylvania, Mary enjoys the chance to spend time with each of them.
"I never thought my family would move away," she says, "but I'm just so happy to be able to have them all come to see me."
