She takes her osteoporosis medicine, eats a calcium-rich diet, takes calcium supplements, and regularly exercises by walking, lifting weights at the gym, and enjoying water sports all summer long."I need to stay healthy; I have so many things I want to do," said Carol, who lives on a lake in Hartford, Mich., during the warmer months and on a 45-foot sailboat moored near Punta Gorda on Florida's Gulf Coast during the colder parts of the year.
Carol, mother of five and grandmother of 15, was diagnosed with osteoporosis two years ago after a routine bone mineral density (BMD) test.
By staying fit, Carol is ready to raise anchor any time and sail off on a new adventure. Recent sailing trips with her husband have included an excursion to the southernmost point in the U.S.—Key West, FL.
When she touches base with her family and friends, Carol finds the conversation often rolls around to health—bone health in particular. "So many of us seem to be facing the same health issues. I tell my friends, 'No way would I let this slow me down.'"
