Here are real women's stories that inspire me to not let osteoporosis slow me
down. I will feature a new Bone Diva who I hope will encourage you
to make the promise for better bone health, like we did.
In fact, she's doing more than ever.
When she's not teaching free yoga classes in her home, gardening, or playing the hand bells in church, Dana can be found going on walking tours, performing community service, and visiting family in Massachusetts or North Carolina.
Dana works hard to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. Her exercise regimen is varied, and she keeps a healthy diet. Dana manages her osteoporosis by taking medication prescribed by her doctor, who also recommended she take calcium and vitamin D supplements. She is thrilled that as a result of her efforts, her bone density has improved each year since her diagnosis in 1999. Dana continues to receive yearly BMD tests to be sure she is staying on track.
With all of the things she has going on in her life, it's no wonder she takes solace in practicing and teaching yoga. She loves it so much that she is doing something she never thought she'd be able to do - get her yoga teaching certification!
Dana believes that yoga has helped her to become more aware of her body and how she is feeling, and uses her yoga classes to stress to her students the importance of paying attention to their bodies too. "For a lot of women it takes something going wrong before they pay attention; it's important to pay attention and be aware of any changes that you notice."
Dana is also looking forward to the summer, when she can go back to Massachusetts and visit her grandchildren and do something else she's never done before - go on a whale watch.
