Here are real women's stories that inspire me to not let osteoporosis slow me
down. I will feature a new Bone Diva who I hope will encourage you
to make the promise for better bone health, like we did.
You may remember Fran Rossi as Miss October in the 2006 Bone Diva calendar, where you learned of her dream of being a stand-up comedian and her love of dancing, gardening, carpentry and Italian cooking. We caught up with her recently for an update.
Fran’s osteoporosis story began when she was 62 during a routine check-up, where she talked with her doctor about getting a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test as she had a history of osteoporosis in her family. The results were staggering: Fran’s doctor told her she had severe osteoporosis in her spine.
Since that time, Fran has been very vocal about osteoporosis among her friends and family. She takes the time to educate them about the disease, encourages them to speak with their doctors about getting a BMD test to find out if they are at risk for osteoporosis. Thanks to her osteoporosis medication, and keeping up with her weight-bearing exercises, Fran's bone health has improved.
A self-proclaimed homebody, Fran loves spending time with her four children and seven grandchildren. When she is not working as a classroom aide at an elementary school, she is tending to her house – painting, gardening, carpentry – even cutting down trees in her backyard!
Fran wants to further spread her message, and let others know that “if you take care of [your osteoporosis], "it can be a very manageable disease."
