Sally's Bone Diva November 2006
Here are real women's stories that inspire me to not let osteoporosis slow me down. Each month, I will feature a new Bone Diva who I hope will encourage you to make the promise for better bone health, like we did.

Riding a camel past the pyramids of Dashur.
Don't tell our generation that we can't do something - it's like waving a red flag in front of a bull.
Sipping tea and sharing global opinions with a robed Bedouin as his goats lounge atop a cave in the ancient Jordanian city of Petra. Training her donkey, Asswan, named for her favorite Egyptian city, to pull an antique buggy through the fields of north central Florida.

These are the ways Joyce Carta, 55, of Anthony, Florida, chooses to spend her time - osteoporosis or not.

Don't tell our generation that we can't do something - it's like waving a red flag in front of a bull.
"So many things I love to do require being physical," said Joyce, who was diagnosed with osteoporosis three years ago. "There are lots of diseases that you can't do anything about. This one you can."

Joyce, who organizes trips to Egypt for sophisticated travelers, takes breaks from her paperwork to take care of her 13-acre ranch.

"There are a lot of chores on my ranch. I need upper body strength for that," said Joyce. She also tends a garden and fills her diet with homegrown vegetables like broccoli and eggplant.

Joyce wasn't surprised by her diagnosis, since both her mother and grandmother had osteoporosis. But that doesn't mean she accepts fragile bones as a normal part of aging.
I thought 'There is something I can do for this - so let's do it' recalled Joyce. I can shift my focus back to doing the things I love.
