Sally's Bone Diva November 2007
Here are real women's stories that inspire me to not let osteoporosis slow me down. Each month, I will feature a new Bone Diva who I hope will encourage you to make the promise for better bone health, like we did.

Nancy Mackel has never been one to sit at home and watch TV, which is a good thing—with seven active grandchildren, she is constantly on the move.
Nancy Mackel with flute.Much of her time is spent at church, where she plays the flute and is joined by her 10-year-old granddaughter in the handbell choir.

Earlier this year, Nancy received some unexpected news. After being diagnosed with osteopenia two years ago, a bone test in March confirmed that she had osteoporosis.

"When I found out I had osteoporosis, I was downright mad," said Nancy. "All my adult life, I exercised and ate the right foods. But sometimes there are other circumstances that are out of our control. I decided right then not to let osteoporosis slow me down."

In addition to regularly taking her osteoporosis medication, Nancy immediately upped the amount of physical activity in her already active lifestyle. On her doctor’s advice, she began to participate in outdoor water aerobics, which not only provides a great workout, but also exposes her to sunlight, which produces vitamin D in the skin.

Nancy is also a Team Captain for "Walk Across Arizona," a program that encourages individuals and families to increase their participation in activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. This is one of the many ways Nancy spreads the word about the importance of bone health.

“I stress to other women to get a bone density test, eat right, exercise, and stop smoking! I tell them, ‘You need to take care of yourself!’"
