When she went on a whim with her husband and daughter last year to take country-western dance lessons, it was the start of a new passion for this grandmother of 11."My husband and I dance nearly every song over the course of the four-hour evenings," says Austin. "The Arizona two-step and West Coast swing are a lot like brisk walking. The faster polkas and waltzes really get us moving, giving us even more of a workout!"
Dancing is just one of many things Austin does to help build strong bones. Diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2005, she is staying physically active and spreading the word to friends and family that it’s never too late to pay attention to bone health.
"I was devastated when I was first diagnosed. It bothered me to the point of guilt," she says. "I wished I had taken action to prevent bone loss much sooner in my life."
Today, Austin’s routine stays fresh with a variety of other activities that keep her on the move, like lifting free weights in her home gym. She also sticks to
her osteoporosis medication, eats healthier and takes calcium supplements. Dancing helps keep Austin feeling healthy, but it’s also great relief from the stress of running a successful Internet marketing business that has her—and her husband—working much of the time.
"We work a lot of hours. Being committed to dancing makes sure we get out and have some fun," says Austin.
