This ancient art of growing miniature trees started in China around 206 B.C. and became even more popular in Japan.Lisa’s collection includes tiny juniper, blooming azalea, jade, and money trees. Surprisingly, bonsai trees are not genetically dwarfed plants. They can be any tree or shrub species that is kept small through a combination of pot confinement, and crown and root pruning. In fact, Lisa has cultivated a boxwood and a holly tree into bonsai style.
Lisa, now 52, was diagnosed with osteoporosis during a regular physical in 2000. She now realizes that osteoporosis runs in her family with both her mother and sister being diagnosed.
"If I had known then there was a possibility of getting osteoporosis, I would have taken better care of myself when I was younger," said Lisa, a stay-at-home mom who has two daughters and a 14-year old stepdaughter.
Since her diagnosis, Lisa is far more conscious of her health. She eats a calcium-rich diet, takes vitamin D and calcium supplements, exercises regularly by playing with her dogs, and takes her osteoporosis medicine as prescribed by her doctor.
