Sally's Bone Diva September 2007
Here are real women's stories that inspire me to not let osteoporosis slow me down. Each month, I will feature a new Bone Diva who I hope will encourage you to make the promise for better bone health, like we did.

Good things come in small packages. That's what Lisa Seymour of East Smithfield, PA, has discovered from her hobby cultivating bonsai trees.
Bonsai Tree. This ancient art of growing miniature trees started in China around 206 B.C. and became even more popular in Japan.

Lisa’s collection includes tiny juniper, blooming azalea, jade, and money trees. Surprisingly, bonsai trees are not genetically dwarfed plants. They can be any tree or shrub species that is kept small through a combination of pot confinement, and crown and root pruning. In fact, Lisa has cultivated a boxwood and a holly tree into bonsai style.

Lisa, now 52, was diagnosed with osteoporosis during a regular physical in 2000. She now realizes that osteoporosis runs in her family with both her mother and sister being diagnosed.

"If I had known then there was a possibility of getting osteoporosis, I would have taken better care of myself when I was younger," said Lisa, a stay-at-home mom who has two daughters and a 14-year old stepdaughter.

Since her diagnosis, Lisa is far more conscious of her health. She eats a calcium-rich diet, takes vitamin D and calcium supplements, exercises regularly by playing with her dogs, and takes her osteoporosis medicine as prescribed by her doctor.
