Sally's Monthly Journal Entry #12
spacer Sisters know each other inside and out. They know just the right way to get a smile out of each other or even spark a laugh. One of life's luxuries is simply being together.
My sister has been such a great support to my mother and me in our efforts to keep our bones healthy. Her interest in our health is one more reason to stick with the challenge of eating calcium-rich foods, regularly doing weight-bearing exercise, and sticking with our osteoporosis medication.

We have always had our differences–my sister is six years younger–but as we grow older we have more and more similarities. My sister works a demanding job in the entertainment industry, too, most recently as an assistant director on a primetime TV show.

There is something so comforting in knowing that my sister is always there for me. As my mind reaches back to so many family holidays, I always see her grinning back at me. I even think back a few months ago to Thanksgiving last year, when it seemed our family was scattered all over the place, she was there with me.

Now that my three children are grown and two of them are married, I have to share them every other year for holidays with their in-laws. I also have to share my mother, who had traveled to Florida to join my brother.
spacer That left my sister, her teenage daughter Maggie, and my son Sam to spend the holidays with me. A tiny little party of four—small enough so we didn't have to wear ourselves out preparing the meal. It was a wonderful day, with old standards playing on the radio and my sister and I dressed in fun, festive clothes. I remember wearing a big fluffy skirt. We spent the morning in the kitchen cooking together: sautéed green beans with mushrooms, a cornbread stuffing with dried apricots, apples, celery, and mushrooms, a great big Caesar salad, and, of course, the bird. And since Sam and Maggie love mashed potatoes, we made them a big bowl.

We put it all out on the island in the kitchen and everyone served themselves. It was such a relaxing time–we sat around the table, giggling nonstop, swapping stories, and eating my homemade pecan pie with vanilla ice cream. It was just the kind of day I'd want to spend with someone very, very special. And she was right there by my side, my sister.

Be well and stay strong.
Signed, Sally Field
