There's something almost meditative about swimming, with the quiet rush of the calming
blue water that flows around you as you glide through it. Some friends even tell me they
experience a type of "swimmer's bliss," like what I used to feel from running. You get the
benefit of all those great endorphins - only it's much kinder to the knees.
It was Plato who first talked about the relationship between a healthy body and a
healthy mind and he's a hero to me for that reason. I learned about aerobic exercise
in the 1970s and the difference in how I felt was huge. It changed my life. Exercise is
something that empowers women in more ways than just physically. When your body
gets stronger, it changes your image of yourself and you become emotionally stronger.

When it comes to your health, especially as you get older, you have to be your own hero.
Be bold, brave, and even courageous. That means sticking to regular exercise, a healthy
diet supplemented with vitamin D and calcium and the bone-strengthening treatment
prescribed by your doctor.
If you're going to stay healthy you have to want it enough to be willing to act. And when
your will is flagging, get inspiration from some of the other health heroes at your local yoga
studio or on the tennis court or distance walking on the road.
That's one of the reasons I like to go to a gym for my weight training. I like to watch other
people being healthy and taking care of themselves. It's inspiring and invigorating. And
after I complete my weight training workout, the pool has never looked so good.
Until next time, keep well and stay strong.
