So, pull out a pen and paper or, I guess, since you’re sitting at your computer right now, open up a new word document and let’s make a list of what we are going to do this year. Consider adding these to your list:
- If you have not done so already, make an appointment with your doctor to schedule a bone mineral density test (BMD). Take along this list of important questions to ask your doctor.
- Tell at least five other women in your life—your mom, your sister, your best friend, your co-worker, your walking buddy—to do the same thing: get their BMD tested and send along the list of questions to them so they can get all the information they need.
- If you don’t already have a workout plan that includes bone strengthening exercise, go ahead and create one. I like to mix up walking, gardening and, my pesonal favorite, hiking.

- Start putting together plans to expand your garden—or start a new one—once spring rolls around. Make a list of what you are going to grow, and remember to include at least one bone healthy, calcium rich leafy green vegetable—like spinach.
- As someone that has signed up for the Challenge, please share the Start Right, Stay Strong Challenge link with the women in your life to remind them to challenge themselves to stay right and stay strong.
- If you’ve recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis, talk to your doctor about treatment options, and dedicate this year to taking care of your bone health.
2008 will be an exciting year, and I can't wait to kick it off when I meet with the inspiring women of the Red Hat Society in Las Vegas later this month.
Please check in throughout the year to learn about this event and the other initiatives we have planned, and report back on your progress toward good bone health.
I wish you all the best for 2008. Stay strong,

Look for Sally's next journal entry in
February, as well as other information on managing postmenopausal osteoporosis. Talk to your doctor about how to manage your bone health, including diet, exercise, and treatment options.
