I always look forward to the spring season, because it means I can get back to my favorite hobby, gardening. Not only do the hours of digging in the dirt result in fresh flowers and vegetables, I reap the physical benefits as well. Many gardening activities – such as weeding, digging, and carrying items – are weight-bearing activities, which are important in maintaining good bone health, so get out there and get your hands dirty!
Other activities that I enjoy as the weather gets warmer include going for walks and reading outside. Walking is another weight-bearing activity that helps keep your bones healthy, so I try to do it as often as I can. And, while sitting outside with a good book isn’t exercise, just 15 minutes in the sun with no sunscreen provides an excellent source of vitamin D, which is vital for bone health.
