Sally's Journal Entry #36
spacer I can't believe it's already October -– this year is going by so fast! With everything moving so quickly, it's important to keep your bone health top of mind. I wanted to take a minute and share with you my top five activities to keep bone health a priority.
  1. Eating right — proper nutrition is essential to building stronger bones, and there are many ways to incorporate calcium-rich foods and beverages into your daily diet. I love mixing berries and yogurt, or even having a glass of calcium-enriched orange juice with my breakfast. An added benefit is that while you improve your bone health, you'll also improve your overall health.
  2. Gardening — even though the flowers are gone in some parts of the country, raking leaves (including stuffing the leaves into those bags!) is a great way to get in some weight-bearing exercise.
  3. Walking the dog — not only is walking great overall exercise, but spending time outside is a good source of vitamin D (but remember — 15 minutes without sunscreen is all you need). Not to worry if you don't have a dog — taking a walk with a friend or on your own is great too.

  1. Exercising — I always make time to follow an exercise routine, either at home or at the gym. The Bone Healthy Workout, now available on bonehealth.com, is a great routine for women with osteoporosis interested in improving their bone health. But don't forget to talk to your doctor before beginning any new physical activity.
  2. Spread the word — don't forget to talk to the women in your life about osteoporosis. It's so important that the women you care about are aware of this disease and the silent effects that it has on their bodies.

The stories that you have all shared with me are so empowering and encouraging. For those of you with a voice that has yet to be heard, please share your story with me so that I can continue to learn from all of you

Stay strong.

Signed, Sally Field
