Sally's Monthly Journal September 2007
spacer Despite my hectic schedule, I always try to find time to tend to my garden, especially in the beginning of fall. I like the idea of harvest, an end to one season and a start of the next.
Beyond being a relaxing activity for me, gardening is a good weight-bearing activity that helps me take care of my bones. Here are some of my favorite tips:

Start with a small section—a garden bed of only a few feet can produce quite a lot of vegetables or flowers. If you're new to yard work or haven’t been very active recently, start with a small task and work for a short period of time.

Make your gardening into a structured exercise routine, alternating light activities with heavier ones. Rake for a while, then dig, then prune.

Take regular breaks.

In addition to my garden, I also make sure to stick to my regular exercise routine, eat a calcium-rich diet, and take supplements with vitamin D and calcium.

Until next time, be well and stay strong,
Signed, Sally Field
